Journey to Midlife Success

Journey to Midlife Success is a powerful conversation about transformation, courage, and rediscovering purpose during the midlife transition. In this podcast episode, Jean MacDonald, the Midlife Midwife, speaks with author advocate Sue Williams about the unexpected path that led her from a long civil service career to becoming a published author and champion for other writers.

Many women reach midlife asking the same question: Who am I now, and what comes next? Sue’s story offers reassurance that change—although sometimes triggered by loss, uncertainty, or life transitions—can also become the starting point for creativity, confidence, and personal reinvention.

A Turning Point in Midlife

For more than twenty years, Sue Williams worked in careers information, advice, and guidance within the civil service. But like many organisations, restructuring repeatedly changed the environment she worked in. Gradually, Sue began to feel as though she was fading into the background.

At the same time, life brought profound personal change. Her father had passed away, and shortly after leaving her job through early retirement, her mother also died. Facing these shifts, Sue found herself confronting the question many midlife women ask:

What do I really want to do with the next stage of my life?

Sorting through her parents’ belongings sparked unexpected reflection. Hidden interests and forgotten memories revealed how easily people can leave parts of themselves unexplored. This discovery became the beginning of Sue’s journey toward rediscovering her own potential.

The Unexpected Power of Writing

Interestingly, writing was never part of Sue’s plan.

Encouraged by a coach, she reluctantly committed to writing morning pages—a creative exercise introduced in Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. The idea was simple: write three pages every morning without worrying about structure, perfection, or purpose.

At first, the exercise felt uncomfortable. But after about ten days, something surprising happened. Sue noticed her writing beginning to flow naturally, even forming rhythmic and poetic patterns.

That small commitment unlocked a new creative path. What began as a personal exercise eventually led Sue to write and publish her own poetry collection, I Am Unique.

Creating Inspiration for Others

Sue’s journey did not stop with writing poetry. Inspired by a poem she wrote called Believe, she collaborated with others to create a book sharing personal stories of transformation and self-belief.

This project eventually evolved into a series of inspirational books and even a deck of reflective cards, designed to encourage journaling and personal reflection. The imagery of butterflies and rainbows symbolised transformation—something many midlife women can deeply relate to.

Over time, Sue continued to publish additional volumes in the Believe series, including:

  • Believe You Can Live a Life You Love at 50+

Each story offers encouragement, practical insights, and exercises to help readers strengthen their confidence and self-belief.

The Lesson: Small Actions Create Big Change

One of the most powerful insights from Sue’s story is how small actions can create unexpected breakthroughs.

Her entire creative journey began with a simple commitment:

Write every day for one month.

What initially felt like a reluctant experiment ultimately revealed talents she never knew she had.

Sue’s experience reminds us that midlife is not the end of the story—it is often the moment when new chapters begin.
