Rethinking Your Menopause Coffee Habit

Rethinking Your Menopause Coffee Habit

For many of us, coffee is practically part of the morning routine.

Wake up. Get dressed. Make coffee. Start functioning.

And when you are already struggling with tiredness or brain fog during perimenopause, giving up the thing that helps you feel awake may be the last suggestion you want to hear.

May’s approach isn’t about making you feel guilty for enjoying your coffee. Instead, she encourages women to become more aware of when and how they drink it.

Don’t Start With an Empty Stomach

In her original article, May highlights caffeine as something worth paying attention to when experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, heat and internal agitation.

Rather than automatically reaching for coffee before you’ve eaten anything, try changing the order of your morning.

Eat something first.

Then have your coffee.

It’s a small adjustment that doesn’t require you to abandon something you enjoy.

You could also experiment with replacing one of your coffees during the day with a caffeine-free drink such as chamomile tea.

The important word here is experiment.

Notice how you feel.

Let Your Drink Cool Down

May also suggests another incredibly simple habit: don’t drink your hot drinks while they’re extremely hot.

If you’re already feeling warm or prone to hot flushes, an intensely hot drink may make that sensation less comfortable. May recommends allowing your tea or coffee to cool slightly before drinking it.

Two minutes.

That’s all it takes.

And perhaps those two minutes can become something else as well.

Instead of checking another email while you’re waiting, sit quietly. Look away from the screen. Relax your shoulders. Take a breath.

Your cup of tea suddenly becomes more than a drink.

It becomes a reminder to slow down.

Small Changes Matter

Menopause doesn’t necessarily require you to reinvent your entire life overnight.

Sometimes it begins with noticing the habits you repeat every day and asking whether they’re still serving the body you have now.

You don’t have to give everything up. You may simply need to start doing some things differently.
