Women who Have Overcome – Nellie Bly 1864 – 1922

Women Who have Overcome – By Dagmar Bryant

What does it take to break out?

Are you the first?

The first person in your family to start a business?

The first person to go to college/university?

The first person who doesn’t follow in your family’s footsteps?

Maybe you’re not the first, but you feel as if you’re the one who is always pushing the boundaries.

As part of our occasional series, Women Who Have Overcome

The thing is, when we are the ones facing the challenges of doing something new, often we get opposition from the people closest to us.

You see what’s happening is that you are pushing not only boundaries but also pushing them out of their comfort zone.

And this is where resilience comes in.

We have to have a certain amount of resilience to push through all the noise, through the objectors and the challenges.

As part of our series, Women Who Have Overcome, I’d like to introduce you to Nellie Bly (1864 – 1922)

Nellie emerged as a pioneer, establishing the benchmark for investigative journalism by delving into subjects such as mental health, poverty, and political corruption. It’s important to remember that during that era, such endeavours were considered unconventional for women. Typically, female writers were relegated to covering society events.

Her most renowned achievement involved her undercover infiltration of the asylum on Blackwell’s Island (now Roosevelt Island). Through her exposé on the abysmal conditions, she catalyzed essential reforms in patient care.

Additionally, she achieved a remarkable feat by circumnavigating the globe, setting a world record with an
astonishing completion time of just 72 days.

Nellie was a trail blazer, as are you.

On those days when you are questioning if you are on the right path, remember that you too are destined for something more, that you need to believe in yourself when no one else does.

Because we don’t shine by being the same as everyone else. We shine by being different. We shine by standing out.

Be the pioneer in your world.
