Nothing to Wear for a Dinner Date
I Had Nothing to Wear for a Dinner Date And How I Fixed it by Annie Den Haan.
Over the holidays, I got asked out by a lovely man for a dinner date.
Couldn’t wait to put my outfit together. I’m a stylist, after all. Therefore, I should have great confidence in my expert wardrobing skills.
The day before, however, my date threw a kink into our plans. He suggested that we attend a mid-week evening service at our church after dinner.
This was a welcome turn of events, mind you, as I love going to the church, we both attend. Surprisingly, I experienced a full-scale wardrobe meltdown: I couldn’t figure out what to wear.
Classic female problem. I’m sure you’re familiar with such moments.
It’s our number one complaint: “I have nothing to wear!” That’s when you’re standing in front of your closet, and you can’t even put a pair of pants or skirt with a decent top.
Truth is, you have lots to wear. But for some reason, you can’t find anything that will make you feel like you are shining like the star you know you really are. All you can think about is what other people are going to say about you from the minute that you walk into a room. And trust me, it’s not pretty.
For me, all I thought about is how I’m going to show up for the date looking like a total frump. Or show up at church looking like a street walker. Two entirely different scenarios that require showing up in the “appropriate attire.”
What to do?
Consequently, I decided to lean into my fears. I pictured my date pulling away from me in disgust because all he could think about was how much I looked like his eighty-something-year-old auntie. Then pictured myself in the opposite scenario…strolling into church trying my best to hide all the bits I had put out on display, and doing my best to avoid all the frowning, disapproving looks.
Taking a moment to breathe and pay attention to my body, I saw the vision clearly. This was the vision I had from the first minute my date invited me to dinner. I didn’t have to show up like a total frump or a streetwalker.
I had something in my closet that made me feel so cool…so extra chic that nobody could comment, except for, “Wow, you look amazing!” And that’s when I nailed it and strutted into both scenarios with my head held high.
Recommended Action Steps when you face Wardrobe/Closet Meltdown
1. Calm down, sit down, close your eyes.
2. Envisage yourself dressed at the extremes of inappropriate clothes
3. Then wait and let your subconscious provide you with the solution
4. Do it and Enjoy
