Are you in the right job?

Are you in the right job?
Are you one of the lucky few who instinctively knew what career you wanted?

For most of us, the answer would have been no.
Generally speaking, people will find their perfect career after years of jumping around from job to job and finally, one day they fall into a career they love. Well if you’re lucky.
In reality, many people stay in jobs they hate, often becoming bored, depressed and even suicidal!
Working in a career you dread can make you ill and can break down your relationships.
What if you could work out what career would best suit you? What if you knew which industry you would excel in?
If you could find your career passion, how would this benefit your life, your career, your future, your health, your relationship and your finances?

Your Career values

What is important to you in a career? What do you need to have at your place of work to keep up your motivation?
Now you shall create your Preference List, a list which is made up entirely of all the individual things that are important for you in a perfect career.
If you could have a job with a high wage and no personal development or training, or a job where you earn a lower wage but gain training and qualifications throughout the year which one would you prefer?
This Preference List should be multi-faceted, including everything that you need to be happy at work. THINK what would be the epitome of your ideal job. Put pen to paper and begin your list, do not worry about ordering this list:

This can be as long or short as you like.

EXAMPLE: Money (High wage)
Training/Qualifications
A Variety of Duties
A Position Where I Can Be Creative
Seeing the end result of my work
Working on my own Initiative

Your individual Preference List typically will consist of between 5-15 ‘Desired Items’, consisting normally of a mix of duties and working benefits.
We now need to find out what you really need from your job, what is really important to you. Be honest as you don’t want to waste time applying for a job you will not enjoy.
You can apply this to your current job to see how far it meets your wishes or falls short.
Then you can discuss these shortfall areas with your boss, if you have that kind of relationship.
Hope this helps
