Beating Diabetes

Stephan Leggett shares how he learned to control his diabetes and eliminate the need for any medication.

My Type 2 Diabetes journey began in 1999 – the year the world was
in panic mode because of the Y2K bug. Beating Diabetes Stephen Leggett
That year I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes – I was 33.

I didn’t know what pre-diabetes was, but I knew that T2D would make me more vulnerable to infection and infections require medication, and type 2 diabetics could get their prescriptions for free.

With the cost of medication, my focus proceeded quickly towards full-blown type 2 Diabetes development.  That was my flawed logic and, in retrospect, this was the first instance of me choosing to medicate my lifestyle, rather than changing it.

Within 9 months, I had T2D.  I remember my first visit to the specialist clinic, where I was processed for the first time – height, weight, blood pressure and then another wait to see the specialist.  The Doctor told me that I had T2D, a chronic condition that he described as a slippery slide.  It struck me as a hopeless metaphor, because a slide’s end is inevitable – perhaps the journey down would have some element of excitement and joy?

‘Not to worry” he said. ‘You’re lucky that we have many treatment protocols (pills and injections) to slow down your diabetes progression”.  I was not comforted.

Over the course of the next 15 years

I think I tried every category of diabetes drug on the market – they all had intolerable side effects.  In 2015 I asked to go on insulin instead – my thinking was that at least insulin was a natural substance.  I was on insulin from 2015 to 2022: I put on an extra 8kg ( taking me to 109kg at its worst).  I had brain fog, I was suffering from intense anxiety, I wasn’t sleeping well, and I was always coming down with some bug.  And I was losing money – c.£250,000 over that period.

But I turned it around.  I buried myself in research material, I gained knowledge, and with it hope – T2D could be reversed.  And I made a plan to do just that.

It wasn’t easy but within a week I had no more need for Insulin.  Within 16 weeks I had lost 16kg.  Within 20 weeks I was off all diabetes medication. I am now taking no insulin or any other medication for my T2D and control it by diet and exercise alone.

I found my Purpose: to teach other open-minded dynamic people to reverse their Type 2 Diabetes too, and in so doing recover the energy and desire to fulfil their purpose too.
