Do you know what career you want?
For most of us, the answer would have been no.
It used to be the advice from teachers and parents to their children was ‘ Work hard to get a good education and a good job, then work hard and wait for your pension.’ If it was ever true, it certainly isn’t now.
Career type jobs are valuable early in life to learn portable skills which you can take with you to create income for yourself later in your life. So you better choose a career where the skills you learn will have a value in the future and, ideally, you enjoy them or at least get satisfaction from doing them well.
Generally speaking, people will find their perfect career after some years of jumping around from job to job and finally, one day they fall into a career they love. Well, if you’re lucky.
What if you knew which industry you would excel in?
If you could find your career passion, how would this benefit your life, your career, your future, your health, your relationship, and your finances?
- What is important to you in a career?
- What do you need to have at your place of work to keep up your
motivation?
Now you should create your Preference List, a list which is made up entirely of all the individual things that are important for you in a perfect career.
If you could have a job with a high wage and no personal development or training, or a job where you earn a lower wage but gain training and qualifications throughout the year which one would you prefer?
This Preference List should be multi-faceted, including everything that you need in order to be happy at work.
THINK about what would be your ideal job.
Put pen to paper and begin your list, do not worry about ordering this list:
This can be as long or short as you like.
Here are some ideas to start you off:
- Money (High wage or Enough for your needs today)
- Training/Qualifications
- A Variety of Duties
- A Position Where I Can Be Creative
- Seeing the end result from my work
- Working on my own Initiative
This is your individual Preference List typically will consist of between 5-15 ‘Desired Items’, normally of a mix of duties and working benefits.
We now need to find out what you really need from your job, what is really important to you.
Be honest as you don’t want to waste time applying for a job you will not enjoy.
Love Jean
