Myth of the Lone Ranger
One of the myths that women, as well as men, are subject to is the Lone Ranger—or Solo Hero.
This myth tells us that a strong, capable person overcomes all obstacles through sheer individual effort. She pushes through challenges alone, relying solely on her own willpower, determination, and grit. She believes asking for help is a sign of weakness or failure. So, she shoulders the burden and soldiers on in silence.
The Truth Behind the Myth
Like all misleading myths, this one contains a kernel of truth. Yes, there are moments in life when we must stand up, face tough situations, and rely on our own inner strength. Sometimes, sheer persistence really is the answer.
But more often than not, acting alone is not only unnecessary—it’s unwise. The truth is, preparation, investigation, and thoughtful planning are essential. Acting without the full picture can lead to impulsive decisions and unintended consequences.
Think about it. The real Lone Ranger—if he ever existed—wouldn’t ride into town without understanding the situation first. He would ask questions, gather information, and probably speak with the locals. But of course, that doesn’t make for dramatic Western film footage.
The Power of Asking for Help
Most people who accomplish meaningful things in life ask for help. They seek advice, learn from others, and build on shared wisdom. It’s not weakness—it’s smart strategy.
So, whose opinion should you seek?
Choose Doers, Not Just Talkers
It’s far better to speak to Doers—people who have actually faced the kind of challenge you’re dealing with—than to listen to those who merely speculate or criticize. If possible, find someone who’s been in your shoes. They’ll likely give you practical, grounded insights rather than vague opinions.
And be selective. Don’t share your plans or struggles with people who lack experience or whose views are shaped by fear and cynicism. Their advice may reflect their limitations, not your potential.
You’re Not Meant to Go It Alone
You don’t have to do everything by yourself. In fact, the wisest move is often to reach out, ask questions, and learn from others.
Hope this helps.
Love,
Jean
