The Shocking Truth about Honey. We had a visit from our local beekeeper last weekend, and he told us that the majority of honey sold in the UK has never had any connection with bees!

It is a mixture of sugars extracted from rice or corn starch and coloured to look like honey. It doesn’t contain any of the vitamins, nutrients, colours or flavours of natural honey from bee hives.

I would call it Industrial Honey. And it is not produced just for the cheap brands. It is made for and sold by big-name brands like the one that begins with an N and ends with an E, with a French accent.

They can get away with this because the regulations in the UK are so weak, and probably weaker in the US. At least here, if it says Strawberry Jam, it must have a specified proportion of strawberries in it. This is not the case with honey, which does not have to contain ANY natural honey.

Is this why so little is being done to preserve our declining bee population? Is it because the commercial side of selling honey has been side-lined by coloured starch?

One wonders if this is just another case of innocent people being ripped off by Big Food. These are a small number of large international companies that dominate the global food system to make exploitative profits with little concern about their impact on public health, the environment, and food security.

On the other hand, could this be a last desperate bid by the Patriarchy to preserve its position?

After all, bees represent a superb example of female cooperation to achieve impressive results.
