Telling it as it is
On my plane back from my cruise, a lady next to me was reading a book called ‘Confessions of a 40-something f**k-up’. She said it was true to life and amusing so I photo’d the cover.
When I got home, I got it from Audible and I am now about a third through it.
It is a series of podcast episodes by a woman who has just returned to London from living in California after a failed business and a romantic relationship she expected to last a lifetime.
It starts grimly in January in London where she has no money and no accommodation. She finds she has to start again while her old friends are well advanced in their marriages, children and careers.
Meanwhile, she has to face up to her age. She says your 40th birthday is no big deal but as you become 40 something your age starts to impact.
Previously you knew there were older people ‘out there’. Now you have to face up to realising that ‘you’re one of them’, or at least not the frisky young woman you were.
Nevertheless, she cheerfully tells her stories of finding accommodation and work and the hazards of internet dating!
While individual circumstances will be different, the common thread we can recognise is facing up to the change in our life circumstances and opportunities as we enter what we are calling the Midlife Transition.
At the point I have reached she is meeting her challenges with courage and humour and her fortunes are beginning to turn in her favour.
I will keep you posted on her progress but in the meantime, if you want to start reading or listening to ‘Confessions of a 40-something f**k-up’ by Alexandra Potter here is the link to find it.
